I’m sitting at the airport right now waiting to board a flight to Greece. It is a place I have never been to before (though it has always been on my bucket list). In terms of its wines, until recently I was always rather intimidated by Greek wines. And I’m going to be flat out honest with you — the reason why is because I couldn’t pronounce a single wine from there if my life depended on it. It’s true! It’s much easier to pronounce words like Pinot Gris or even Albariño than it is to say Assyrtiko, and up until a few months ago I was even pronouncing that word wrong! So my first plan of action is to make the wines of Greece less intimidating, less confusing, and more intriguing for anybody who reads this site.
In preparation for this trip I sought out books on Greece but only found one worth the read, by Konstantinos Lazarakis. There is also only one blogger that I am aware of who writes actively about the wines of Greece. His name is Markus Stolz of the blog Elloinos. Other than that there is not a great deal of information on the wines of this country. Therefore, I’m hoping to uncover some helpful information directly from the source. I firmly believe traveling to any wine growing region is truly the best and most enriching way to learn about their wines. But for many wine lovers that is just not possible. Hopefully by the time I return from Greece I can share stories and pictures with you that make you feel like you have been on the journey with me, and hopefully encourage you to expand your palate to include some of the amazing wines of Greece.
